Cardiac Research Institute, Addis Ababa

Flux architects were commissioned to design and build a Cardiac Research Institute on the grounds of the University of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This landmark building represents a major advance in medical research facilities in Africa encouraging social and intellectual interaction on 5 levels. The curved geometry of the building shields noise and heat yet embraces and opens up to the landscape. A central open courtyard forms the hub of the building. This space is lined with modular laboratories, which are able to adapt to new methods and techniques, ensuring that the building can conduct advanced research into local neglected diseases  and establish data bases of heart disease in Ethiopia and other African countries.
