Royal Ballet London

As part of the Wayne McGregor Triple Bill in 2016, we were commissioned by the Royal Ballet London to collaborate with choreographers Robert Binet and Charlotte Edmonds. The kinetic stage design is inspired by the principles of a heart-lung machine and extra-corporal circulation. A series of simple ball chains are suspended in catenary curve formations and form an 11 x 5-meter large interactive kinetic hanging sculpture. It explores the idea of ‘ breathing space’ and creates, through movement and light, an ephemeral and thickened atmosphere in constant flux. A multilayered Japanese paper fringe mirrors the sculpture in elevation and becomes a permeable wall, allowing for interplay between the 3D body and its 2D silhouettes.
