Bricks for Health
International design competition, Finalist

Situated in rural Africa, the design of this paediatric clinic model seeks to implement a contemporary approach towards an age old building technique through developing a sustainable form of construction and reintroducing the use of earth as a serious building material. The utilization of adobe bricks keeps the importation of costly building materials to a minimum. At the same time, using local materials and reviving indigenous construction techniques can provide long term employment and training opportunities to local communities.

Climatic consideration influenced the building‘s form and choice of materials. On the ground floor cool air from the gardens cross-ventilates the building. On the upper floor air flows freely between the roof and the ceiling, ensuring moderate room temperature.
