The Rwanda Heart Centre

The Sub-Saharan African region faces many healthcare challenges including a shortage of doctors and specialists, inadequate access to necessary medications and patient limitations. Since the Rwandan genocide in 1994, the region's healthcare system has been severely crippled. Today, Rwanda has only one doctor for every 10,500 patients and only five cardiologists serving a population of approximately 12 million people.

The Rwanda Heart and Research Centre is commissioned by Sir Magdi Yacoub and the Heart Care and Research Foundation Rwanda. The project is enabled by the Ministry of Health in Kigali and secured patronage of the first Lady in Rwanda. It is a mission-aligned project and foresees to conduct 800 cardiovascular free of charge surgeries per annum with the intention for future expansion. Its medical ambition is to transfer knowledge, skills and experience across the region and help create a biomedical and innovation knowledge base, which can be exported to Africa and the world at large.
